Strategic Vision and Rationale for the Establishment of the Faculty
The Faculty of Artificial Intelligence (AI) and Informatics aspires to be recognized both regionally and globally as an institution of excellence and leadership in artificial intelligence and informatics education, research, and community engagement. Unlike traditional scientific faculties that only focus on mathematics, physics, and natural sciences, this faculty additionally aims to cultivate a new generation of dynamic, innovative, and visionary professionals equipped with extensive scientific and practical knowledge. Graduates will be prepared to lead cutting-edge intelligent projects in informatics and data science, addressing the evolving demands of the global labor market within the framework of ethical values.
Current Landscape and Global Trends
A number of the departments and programs within the Faculty of Artificial Intelligence and Informatics are currently offered at many universities only within engineering faculties, often with limited scope and diversity. At both national and international levels, the number of dedicated Faculties of Artificial Intelligence and Informatics remains very small. Most existing programs focus on traditional engineering disciplines grounded in mathematics, physics, and natural sciences.
The establishment of a dedicated Faculty of AI and Informatics at our university will set us apart from other institutions by offering a more comprehensive and innovative approach to the rapidly evolving fields of AI, informatics and data science. This will make our faculty a leader in these fields, helping to shape future technologies and addressing key global challenges.
Institutional Capacity and Strategic Contribution
With its extensive academic staff and infrastructure, Near East University is well-positioned to undertake this endeavor. Near East University, established in 1988, has grown to encompass 20 faculties, offering 196 undergraduate and associate degree programs, as well as 240 postgraduate and doctoral programs. The establishment of the Faculty of Artificial Intelligence and Informatics will further elevate the university’s standing in international and national academic rankings, particularly in terms of scientific publication output and global recognition.
This initiative aligns with the university’s commitment to advancing scientific inquiry, addressing global challenges, and fostering societal progress. It is expected that the new and unique faculty on the island and in Türkiye will attract significant attention from international students, contributing to the university’s global reputation and bringing many additional benefits.
