Impact Rankings 2025

The Times Higher Education (THE) Impact Rankings assess universities worldwide based on their alignment with the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). Unlike traditional rankings that focus solely on academic output, the Impact Rankings spotlight institutional efforts to address global challenges through health, education, equity, sustainability, and collaboration.

In the 2025 edition, Near East University reached a major milestone by ranking 43rd among 2,318 universities globally, securing the top position in Cyprus and second place among universities in Türkiye. With an overall score of 92.8, the university was recognized for its holistic approach to sustainability, community well-being, and inclusive education.

These results were officially announced at the Global Sustainable Development Congress (GSDG), held in Istanbul from June 16–19, 2025. Near East University actively participated in the congress with a delegation including the Rector Prof. Dr. Tamer Şanlıdağ, Vice Rector Assoc. Prof. Dr. Umut Aksoy, and faculty members from the Office of Quality and Accreditation Prof. Dr. Sevcan Kurtulmuş Yılmaz, Assoc. Prof. Dr. Ayça Demet Atay and Assoc. Prof. Dr. Özay Önöral, representing the university’s commitment to sustainability-focused higher education.

SDG 3 – Good Health and Well-being

The university’s extensive healthcare ecosystem—which includes Near East University Hospital, Dr. Suat Günsel University of Kyrenia Hospital, and affiliated clinics across the region—serves as a cornerstone of its contribution to public health. These institutions provide accessible healthcare, support medical research, and offer hands-on training for future professionals. Preventive health campaigns and community outreach programs further elevate its impact in this area.

SDG 4 – Quality Education
Global Rank: 13 | Score: 86.7

This achievement reflects the university’s unwavering focus on accessible and high-quality education at every stage—from early childhood to postgraduate studies. Emphasis on flipped learning models, interdisciplinary curricula, and research-led undergraduate programs demonstrates a forward-thinking educational philosophy designed to equip students for complex global realities.

SDG 5 – Gender Equality
Global Rank: 57 | Score: 71.1

Near East University integrates gender equity into every dimension of university life through dedicated centers, gender-sensitive governance, inclusive hiring practices, and awareness-building initiatives. By empowering female students, researchers, and leaders, the university continues to address disparities and build a more equitable academic environment.

SDG 11 – Sustainable Cities and Communities
Global Rank: 15 | Score: 89.8

The university plays an active role in cultural preservation and civic engagement. Institutions such as the Cyprus Museum of Modern Arts, the Grand Library, and various public art programs provide broad access to culture and knowledge. Beyond the campus, the university implements projects that support sustainable infrastructure, accessibility, and urban vitality.

SDG 17 – Partnerships for the Goals
Global Rank: 35 | Score: 95.2

Near East University maintains strong international ties through strategic alliances, collaborative research, and active membership in global sustainability platforms. The university consistently shares open-access sustainability data and contributes to cross-border dialogues, reinforcing its role in advancing shared global objectives.

The overall ranking is calculated based on the university’s top three SDG performances combined with mandatory evaluation of SDG 17. This ensures a balanced reflection of institutional strengths and strategic impact across multiple domains.

The ranking is not just a reflection of current success, but a commitment to continuous growth in service of both local and global communities.
