URAP (University Ranking by Academic Performance)
The URAP ranking system was developed to evaluate the academic performance of universities worldwide, providing a comprehensive overview of how institutions perform on a global scale. Unlike many ranking systems that cover only the top 700-1,000 universities, URAP includes a more extensive selection, ranking the top 2,500 institutions out of 3,000 evaluated, which represents about 12% of all Higher Education Institutions (HEIs) worldwide.
Aim and Scope URAP focuses on academic quality, measuring the productivity, impact, and international collaboration of universities. By providing a broader view of academic performance, URAP helps universities identify areas for growth and strategic development. The ranking system aims to offer a fair assessment, especially for universities outside of developed regions, using objective data from reliable sources like Web of Science and InCites.
Ranking Indicators The URAP World Ranking is based on six indicators, emphasizing both the quality and quantity of academic output. The following indicators and their contributions to the overall score are:
- Article (21%): Measures current scientific productivity based on articles published in journals with high impact factors, excluding those with over 1,000 authors.
- Total Document (10%): Evaluates the sustainability of academic productivity by counting all types of scholarly outputs, including conference papers and reviews.
- Citation (21%): Assesses research impact by the total number of citations received for publications between 2018 and 2022.
- Article Impact Total (18%): Adjusts productivity by measuring the normalized impact of articles relative to the global average in 24 subject areas.
- Citation Impact Total (15%): Measures research impact adjusted by normalized citation performance across various disciplines.
- International Collaboration (15%): Reflects global collaboration by counting publications co-authored with international institutions.
Data Collection and Methodology URAP collects data from Web of Science and InCites, ensuring reliability through pre-processing and data-cleaning techniques. By addressing skewed distributions, the scoring method fairly assesses academic performance across institutions. Weights for each indicator were determined by experts using the Delphi method, ensuring a balanced evaluation.
Objective and Continuous Improvement URAP aims to provide a clear view of where universities stand globally and help them identify potential areas for improvement. The system emphasizes objectivity and transparency, using bibliometric data from reliable sources. URAP continuously works on refining its indicators to better serve the academic community.
