Near East University Ranked 501–550 in THE World University Rankings 2027
Near East University has been placed in the 501–550 band in the Times Higher Education (THE) World University Rankings 2027, remaining the highest-ranked university in Northern Cyprus and occupying the fourth-highest ranking band when compared with Turkish universities.
In the 2027 results, Near East University is the highest-ranked university in Northern Cyprus. Other universities from Northern Cyprus appearing in the ranking include European University of Lefke in the 601–650 band, Cyprus International University in the 651–700 band and Eastern Mediterranean University in the 701–800 band.
4th Among Turkish Universities by Ranking Band
Near East University also holds a prominent position when the 2027 results are considered alongside Turkish universities. When institutions are compared according to their official THE ranking bands, Near East University is placed in the fourth-highest band among Turkish universities.
Koç University and Middle East Technical University share the 326–350 band, followed by Sabancı University in the 376–400 band and Boğaziçi University in the 401–450 band. Near East University is positioned in the 501–550 band, ahead of several well-established Turkish institutions, including Bilkent University and Istanbul Technical University, both ranked in the 651–700 band.
A More Detailed Global Ranking Landscape
The 2027 World University Rankings include 2,297 universities from 118 countries and territories, making this the most extensive edition of the ranking to date. THE also introduced a more granular banding structure for 2027. Precise ranks are reported for institutions in the global top 300, while the remainder of the ranked universities are grouped into 18 ranking bands, compared with 11 in the previous edition.
This revised structure provides greater differentiation among institutions outside the top 300 and offers universities a more detailed basis for benchmarking their global performance. The change in banding should therefore be kept in mind when interpreting movements between consecutive editions, rather than treating bands as directly equivalent from year to year.
Research Quality and International Outlook Remain Key Strengths
Near East University continued to record its strongest results in International Outlook and Research Quality.
Its International Outlook score of 89.4 reflects the University’s highly international academic environment and its engagement in cross-border education and research. THE evaluates this pillar through the proportions of international students and international academic staff, together with the extent of international research collaboration.
The University also achieved a Research Quality score of 76.1, maintaining research impact as one of the strongest dimensions of its global profile. Research Quality carries the largest single pillar weighting in the THE methodology, accounting for 30 per cent of the overall score, and incorporates citation impact, research strength, research excellence and research influence.
Research Environment Records Further Progress
Comparison with the 2026 results reveals a particularly positive development in the Research Environment pillar. Near East University’s score increased from 21.7 in 2026 to 24.1 in 2027, an improvement of 2.4 points.
The Research Environment pillar evaluates research reputation, research income and research productivity and accounts for 29 per cent of the overall THE World University Rankings score.
Across the five pillars, Near East University recorded the following scores in 2027: Teaching 26.0; Research Environment 24.1; Research Quality 76.1; Industry 53.1; and International Outlook 89.4.
Compared with 2026, Research Environment was the only pillar to record an increase. International Outlook remained broadly stable, moving from 90.0 to 89.4, while Research Quality changed from 78.5 to 76.1, Industry from 54.4 to 53.1 and Teaching from 27.4 to 26.0.
Taken together, the results show a profile in which research quality and internationalisation continue to distinguish the University, while the improvement in Research Environment points to strengthening institutional conditions for research.
Five Pillars of Global University Performance
THE evaluates research-intensive universities through 17 performance indicators organised under five pillars: Teaching, Research Environment, Research Quality, International Outlook and Industry. Teaching accounts for 29.5 per cent of the overall score, Research Environment for 29 per cent, Research Quality for 30 per cent, International Outlook for 7.5 per cent and Industry for 4 per cent.
The methodology therefore considers a broad institutional profile rather than research output alone, combining academic reputation, research productivity and impact, international engagement, teaching environment and knowledge transfer.
Building on the 2026 Milestone
Near East University’s entry into the 401–500 band in the 2026 World University Rankings represented an important milestone in the University’s international ranking journey and marked its first inclusion among the world’s top 500 universities.
The 2027 result establishes a new benchmark for the next stage of that journey. With particularly high scores in Research Quality and International Outlook, alongside improvement in Research Environment, the results provide a clearer view of both the University’s established strengths and the areas in which further institutional development can contribute to future progress.
