Research Competence Development Unit: Strengthening Research Capacity at Near East University
The Research Competence Development Unit supports researchers across the research lifecycle, from developing a research question to funding, publication, innovation and societal impact.
Near East University’s Research Competence Development Unit was established to support researchers at every stage of the research process and to strengthen the University’s research culture. Operating under the Research and Entrepreneurship Coordination Office within the Rectorate, the Unit provides a structured framework for developing the knowledge and skills of academic staff and postgraduate researchers.
Its activities span the research lifecycle—from identifying a research question and designing a study to securing funding, publishing results and translating research outcomes into innovation and societal value. By bringing these different stages together within a coordinated development framework, the Unit aims to make researcher development a continuous part of academic life.
Researchers at different career stages face different needs. A postgraduate researcher may require support in research design or data analysis, while an experienced academic may be developing an international collaboration or preparing a competitive funding application. The Unit responds to these differing needs by providing accessible and practice-oriented opportunities that support rigorous, ethical and effective research.
Working in collaboration with academic units and relevant coordination offices across the University, the Unit also creates opportunities for researchers from different disciplines and career stages to learn from one another and develop new forms of collaboration.
Developing Competencies Across the Research Lifecycle
The Unit’s programme covers core areas including research methods, literature searching, statistical analysis, data visualisation and research data management. Academic writing, journal selection, peer review, open access and science communication are also included, helping researchers communicate their findings effectively to both specialist and wider audiences.
Research ethics and scientific integrity form an important part of this work. Topics include responsible authorship, conflicts of interest, data security and the ethical use of emerging technologies, ensuring that research competence is approached not only as a technical skill set, but also as a responsibility.
Project development represents another major area of focus. Workshops, mentoring activities and project clinics help researchers identify funding opportunities, interpret calls for proposals, build research teams, prepare budgets and articulate the potential impact of their work. The Unit also supports interdisciplinary and international collaboration by creating opportunities for researchers with complementary areas of expertise to connect.
Connecting Research, Innovation and Society
The Unit works with faculties, institutes, research centres, laboratories and University structures involved in research support, quality, library services and innovation. Its broader network of engagement may also include public institutions, professional organisations, industry partners and international researchers.
Depending on the subject and the needs of participants, activities can take the form of seminars, hands-on workshops, online learning, mentoring or peer-learning sessions. This flexible approach allows training to be adapted to different research areas, levels of experience and development needs.
The annual programme is shaped by researcher feedback, institutional priorities and evidence of emerging needs. Participation, learning outcomes and the application of newly acquired skills in research practice are then reviewed to inform future activities. Through this continuous cycle of planning, evaluation and improvement, Near East University seeks to strengthen long-term research capacity and enhance the quality, visibility and societal impact of its research.
